How to Get Rid of Spider Veins

Spider veins are those tiny blood vessels which appear on the skins surface, most commonly on the thighs, ankles and feet. Find out how to get rid of your spider veins.

Spider veins or in medical terms telangiectasias are small dilated blood vessels that are not felt on palpation measuring about 1 mm in diameter. They can appear on every part of the body but are more common on the thighs, ankles and feet. They appear in the form of a web in short fine lines.

Spider veins appear because of improper blood circulation, when the blood doesn't circulate as it should due to clogged veins or other vein abnormalities.
They can appear at any age and are more frequent on pregnant women. Genetics can also influence the appearance of spider veins.
The symptoms of spider veins include:

  • itching

  • aching

  • swelling

  • fatigue

  • In order to prevent and treat spider veins from appearing it is necessary to:

  • ensure proper blood circulation. Avoid standing up for prolonged periods of time and crossing your legs for long periods of time. Pressure and improper blood circulation will lead to the appearance of spider veins. Exercise regularly and relax your feet whenever they feel tired

  • getting in shape and maintaining an optimal body weight so there is less pressure on the feet. Excess weight can have a negative effect over the health as well as blood circulation

  • massages are great for stimulating blood circulation thus helping prevent spider veins

  • compression stockings which come in various styles and compression power are a good method of preventing spider veins from developing

  • To get rid of spider veins there are several treatments available like:

  • Laser treatments can be used to treat spider veins. The laser is applied on the surface of the skin and it eliminates the spider veins from the surface of the skin. Several sessions of treatment may be needed in order to get rid of the spider veins, and the results may vary from person to person

  • IPL treatments can be used to get rid of spider veins. The intense pulsed light generates heat which damages the small blood vessels causing them do disappear, without causing any damage to the skin

  • Sclerotherapy is a treatment in which a sodium chloride solution is injected directly into the spider veins. The solution damages and closes the small veins causing them to disappear gradually. This procedure requires no anesthesia
